Scenic Spots
Cape Inubozaki Lighthouse (Choshi City)
Inubozaki is located in the easternmost part of the Kanto region and protrudes into the rough seas of the Pacific Ocean. A white-walled lighthouse, designed by English engineer R. H. Brunton and lit in 1874, stands defiantly on the vertical bluff. From the observation room 99 steps up the spiral staircase, you can enjoy a bird's-eye view of the blue Pacific Ocean. Observe the powerful waves by walking along the promenade under the bluff.
Sawara Municipal Aquatic Botanical Gardens (Sawara City)
By making the most of the natural water and greenery, this botanical garden is known for its Indian lotus and irises. June is the best season for irises. 1,500,000 irises of 350 species are in bloom throughout the gardens, home of the iris festival. More than 200 species of Indian lotus are spectacular in July and August, where their beautiful appearance helps you forget the hot weather, at least for a moment.
Kujukuri Beach
Kujukuri Beach stretches for more than 66 km in the eastern part of the Boso Peninsula. The spectacular white sandy beach and deep-green pines that continue in an arch are magnificent. This area is mild and there are many good places for swimming. Many young people gather here through out the year as it is one of the best surfing spots in the Kanto region. Dragnet fishing is a common activity favored by local fishermen.
Tokyo Wan Aqua-line
This expressway connects Kisarazu City and Kawasaki City in Kanagawa across Tokyo Bay. The total length of the expressway is 15 km, and it includes a bridge and a shielded tunnel. The latest Japanese technology and know-how was applied in building this marine engineering marvel. This expressway connects the two cities in just 15 minutes, making it convenient for industries and reducing traffic congestion in the Metropolitan area.
Umegase Valley (Ichihara City)
The Kurokawa River, a branch of the Yorogawa River flows through this valley. The 50m (164 feet) high cliffs that run along both sides of the river are spectacular, symbolizing the wildness of the Boso region. Each season has a unique flavor: cherry blossoms and azaleas in the spring to early summer, the voices of singing frogs echo in the summer, while autumn leaves are a colorful sight in the fall.
Mountain (Futtsu City and Kyonan Town)
As its name implies, this rocky mountain with a jagged ridge like the tooth of a saw rises precipitously from the sea. In the past, Boshu stones, which is a famous material used in buildings, were cut from this mountain, so the marks from chisels on the rock face are a spectacular sight. When you ride the tram up the mountain, you get a wonderful view extending over the Izu Islands and Mt. Fuji.
Flower Garden of Minami Boso
Minami Boso (southern Chiba) has a mild climate where rape blossoms bloom even in the middle of winter. Along the coast from Sunosaki lighthouse passing Shirahama via Chikura and Wada to Tokai there is a driving course where flower gardens run along both sides of the road. Narcissus begin to bloom in December, followed by poppy and rape blossoms, for an early taste of spring.
Katsuura Underwater Park (Katsuura City)
Inlets and cliffs predominate and old pine trees are a beautiful spectacle along Ubara . Katsuura Underwater Park is located at 60m (197 feet) offshore and has an observatory where visitors can observe the sea at 6m (20 feet) below sea level. This entire region is a rich fishing ground, so visitors can appreciate the natural ecology of about 90 species of fish, such as the parrot fish and opaleye.
Onjuku Beach (Onjuku Town)
Onjuku beach is a beautiful white sand beach which extends for more than 2 km (2,186 yards). The site was the inspiration for a wonderful children's song "tsuki no sabaku" (moon desert), composed by well-known poet Masao Kato. In the center of the beach, a statue of a camel carries a prince and a princess from the song, and a memorial hall has been constructed introducing works of Masao Kato, who was also a painter.
Kasori Shell Mound (Chiba City)
This is proudly one of the world's largest shell mounds from the Jomon period, and it is designated as a historic site. Displacement of the shell mound and a dugout revived at a habitation site can be seen. In the museum, many archaeological finds are also displayed.
