Takabe Shrine "Knife Ceremony"
Ceremony imageTakabe Shrine in Chiba is the only shrine in Japan dedicated to the god of the culinary arts. The Knife Ceremony is a time-honored rite in which a sea bream is carved up into delicious dishes by deftly wielding a cooking knife and long chopsticks, while never so much as touching the fish with the fingers. Followed by the ancient postures, this solemn ceremony passes on Japanese culinary tradition over generations.
Takabe Shrine "Traditional Cuisine"
A gracious set meal prepared in an ancient style associated with Takabe Shrine. Using the fresh ingredients of the season and cooked in ways that enhance the original taste of the ingredients, the dish is simply seasoned and presented with oak and magnolia leaves.

Japanese Lyrical Noh Drama

Noh has about 700 years of history which has all essence of dance, drama, music and poetry nurtured by Japanese for centuries. The main characters are ghosts, and they tell stories of their past lives. For an additional cost, Takigi Noh, an outdoor performance by the light of a bonfire, is also available.

CHOSHI HANE Taiko Drums

Taiko drumming inherited over generations in Chiba's Choshi area. Unlike other Taiko performance, a pair of drummers lift an instrument jumping around and beating. The ultimate is Nekase-uchi in which the drummer beat while lying down on the ground. This is the drumming of power and technique by seafaring men.

Kisarazu Suwa Taiko

Dynamic drum beats of Kisarazu Suwa Taiko attract guests by their sounds accompanied by the Japanese flute and bell as well as the performances by young girls to adults. Guests are invited to try the drums at the end. The old folk ballad Kokiriko is one of their popular repertoire.

Mizore-style Funabashi Shibarokudaiko

The Oya-daiko is performed by the Mizore-style Japanese Drum Preservation Association, which has a 44-year history. The group mainly uses Nagado-daiko in a physical performance of creative drumming. A varied repertoire, including folk ballads and popular music as well as combination drumming, attracts audience.

Funabashi Baka-men Masked Dance

The human emotions are expressed through comical gestures in Funabashi's folk art. Performers wear masks depicting anger, laughter, Hyottoko and Okame (humorous folk characters), and dance to the Bakappayashi festival music. The Baka-men originated a century ago, when fishing villages around Funabashi prayed to expel evil spirits and ensure safety at sea.

Festival Plaza

Fair stalls are an essential part of a summer festival. Yo-yo scooping pools and shooting galleries create a festive ambience in the Square. Performances of traditional Japanese craftsmanship such as candy making and portrait painting are also available.

Sawarabayashi Festival Music

The float parade held in July and October is a Significant Intangible Folk Cultural Asset. Performed on the float, the Sawarabayashi is a unique musical accompaniment perfected under the influence of Kabuki, Joruri and Noh over a period of cultural influx from Edo.

Leading performers of the Japanese drum offering creative variations on the rhythms of Chiba. They are well received in Japan and abroad. Their fast-paced Summer Festival was a major success and a much-requested number on cable radio.

Ocarina

Kazumi Sato portrayed the Yatsu Tidal Flat in her first CD titled "The Path of Light" in 1997. Since then, she has been actively performing throughout Japan and releasing new titles. At times soothing and invigorating, her enjoyable performance and music bring out the varied sounds of the ocarina.
